Yasu Sushi Bistro
Categories: Sushi Bars, Japanese
This is the reason Yelp is transforming our eating experience. It used to be that business trips to unknown locales would result in poor to middling eating experiences at some wheel-of-fortune restaurant near the hotel. With the help of Yelp, my partner and I were able to find outstanding food despite rarely having ventured into Phoenix before.
Finding Yasu Sushi Bistro was certainly a great way to end our Arizona experience; and with awesome sushi no less. The nigiri pieces were wonderfully fresh -- a very welcome and unexpected pleasure -- and the black cod miso was the hit of the night.
Furthermore, the service was wonderful as we were treated to the enthusiasm and knowledge of our great server. Regretfully, I'm not sure if her name is spelled with a "K" or a "C" but either way, having the infinitely helpful Cali -- "like Cauliflower" -- was the cherry on top of a great meal.
Perfect for: Those craving fresh sushi while surrounded by desert and cactuses.

We come here here when we're in the mood for the triple crown of Japanese food: sushi, ramen, and terikyaki. The deluxe bento box is pretty big and an excellent value and the ramen (not in the menu, look at the wall for two pictures) is good sized and tasty. The sushi itself is always very fresh and the only quibble we might have with this place is a lack of rolls. But take a look inside and you'll see plenty of Japanese patrons so this place must be authentic, right?
The miso is excellent, the curry was just so-so.
Perfect for: Quality sushi in a laid back atmosphere.

Cafe Gyro

We've searched long and hard for good gyros in the Fremont area and after a few less than stellar excursions, we've settled on Cafe Gyro as the best in show. We should've never doubted Cafe Gyro's cheap prices, huge portions, and friendly service. We love the guys there and the food is always pleasantly rewarding.
If you think a gyro is just a gyro, you need to check this place out and get that mentality straightened out.
Perfect for: Gyros and shawarmas to go, not an ideal place to sit down to enjoy the decor.

Forget the decor (essentially a concrete stand in a strip mall), Bob's is the place to go when you want to pick up a healthy sized burger and head home after a long day at work. The giant burgers live up to its name and while the actual burger isn't quite as good as Fat Burger, it's close enough to make the comparison valid.
I'd recommend calling ahead so your burger is ready for you just as you drive up.
Perfect for: When fast food burgers just won't cut it and you need something big and juicy.

Where else can you combine great cheesesteaks, huge pieces of fish and chips, and some good ass teriyaki (plus a huge selection of hot sauce if you're into that type of thing) in one restaurant?
This unique place has cheap, delicious, and very tasty food. Some people might complain about the decor but you're here to combine flavors in your mouth, not impress your date.
Get the deluxe cheesesteak, don't miss the fish n chips, and you'll come back in a week or two.
Perfect for: People in the mood for the poor man's fusion food. Asian, American, and British foods all in one.

Semo is our Fremont stand by for good rolls that are innovative, a good size, and comparably priced. The wait staff is attentive and friendly and despite some wait times on various visits, we return on a weekly basis.
All of the rolls are worth trying out and there's never been a time we haven't been satisfied at Semo.
Perfect for: When you have some time to kick back and satisfy your sushi (roll) cravings. A nice place to come if you want to become a regular.

My friends have been touting this place to me for months.
I have a confession, I'm a ramen fanatic and I fancy myself a bit of a ramen connoisseur. My main area of expertise is in the dried kind -- Shin Ramen is #1 -- but occassionally I dabble with the real stuff.
Located in the middle of suburbia/industria, Foo Foo Tei is the epitome of a hidden treasure. The ramen is cheap, the chicken wings are delicious (use the lemon), and the decor is... I have no idea what the decor was like, we were too busy eating.
I give Foo Foo Tei a high-five!

This is the first place I always go when I visit New York. The corn is cheap, delicious, and addictive. The definition of cheap NYC eats.
Perfect for: Everything. Corn is the best food on earth. Cuban corn is the best food in the universe.
